U.Va. Health cuts scribe hours as AI documentation tools expand across Health System

The Cavalier Daily reports that U.Va. Health has cut undergraduate scribe hours in its Emergency Department after rolling out DAX Copilot, an ambient AI note-drafting tool, in 2025. A new schedule began Sept. 15, and a one-third reduction to the program's annual budget was announced in April. Scribes described shorter shifts and AI notes needing heavy editing. Physicians raised concerns about deskilling and pressure to see more patients.
